While decisions to outsource transport and logistics functions are sometimes only based on the cost of the service, this is an extremely short-sighted approach.

De Villiers cautions smaller businesses to avoid making short-term decisions based purely on the cost of the service of the 3PLs. This is considering the rapid rise of small “fly-by-night” operators over the years that have taken advantage of embattled companies operating in an extremely challenging economic environment. In many instances, companies have incurred significant damages, including stolen and damaged cargo.
